Broken Dive shaft at Oulton!

Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship, Round 5 Oulton Park, 23 June 2012.

The Neil Garner motorsport team arrived in Cheshire for the 5th round of the 2012 Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship with high hopes of continuing their excellent form this season. However it was not to be after a rare mechanical failure cost the Azteca/Strata 21 Mosler an almost certain fifth victory of the season.

Fridays practise session had been held in torrential rain however Saturday was dry so set up changes needed to be made to the car driven by Javier Morcillo, Manuel Cintrano and Paul White. The three drivers completed a strong qualifying session just 0.155 seconds behind the Bailey/Schulz Ferrari F430 and started the race second on the grid ahead of the Mustill/Berridge entered Aquila.

Morcillo was first behind the wheel but on the entry into the first corner was passed, in a cloud of tyre smoke, by the fast starting and late braking Aquila. With his trademark cool race head Morcillo was happy to slip in behind the Aquila and was able to easily follow in third place with 0.8 second separating the 3 leading cars in the opening laps. Morcillo set the teams fastest lap of 1.39.038 on lap 4 and on lap 15 he swept past the Aquila and headed off in pursuit of the Ferrari which was 7 seconds in front. Within 3 laps Morcillo had cut the deficit to 3.2 seconds before bringing the Mosler in for its first pit stop on lap 18. The Ferrari pitted on the following lap but due to the Spaniards fast laps and a short safety car period the Mosler found itself in front of the Ferrari and after a short drive through the field took the lead on lap 24.

With the Bailey/Schulz Ferrari at the back of the pack and the Aquila retiring on lap 20 the Moslers nearest challenger was the class 2 Motionsport Ferrari 458 which was falling away at several seconds per lap.

A 5th victory was looking likely when on lap 55 and with 75 minutes of the race remaining the Mosler, limped into the pits with a broken drive shaft. The team set to work and successfully replaced the damaged part and with Paul White taking over rejoined the race on lap 63, 7 laps behind the leading Lotus Evora and with all hopes of a race win evaporated.

White drove a solid stint before handing the car over to Manuel Cintrano who finally completed the race 8 laps behind the overall winner, the class 3 Lotus Evora and 4 laps behind the class 1 Ferrari of Bailey/Schulz.

After finishing the race team boss Neil Garner said, “Disappointing to brake the drive shaft but the team done a great job to get the car repaired and out again, the drivers done a great solid job as normal keeping the car out of trouble and on the black stuff!. Were still leading the class 1 championship which is important so now were looking forward to the Brands GP race in a few weeks”.

The Neil Garner motorsport teams next outing will be at round 6 of the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship on the Brands Hatch International circuit over the weekend of July 13/14/15.
