Jan's retirement from Racing

Press release 26th August 2011

It is with great and considerable regret that Hawthorns Motorsport today announces the retirement from racing of Jan Persson on health grounds. Jan has been Rod Barrett’s co driver for the last 13 years and has been a key player in all the various race series and cars that the team has been involved in since 1998. He will be sorely missed by the team and no doubt by the many competitors that he has raced with during his many years participation in Motorsport.

The team now faces a difficult transition in its efforts to find a replacement, preferably, a long term team mate/co-driver who will fit in with the ethos that the team subscribes to, for this motorsport operation is not one that is run for profit; rather it is a team that runs for the benefit of those who race under its banner. The right candidate will either be an established experienced driver who is looking to join a team where budgets are based on purely the costs involved and provides the incoming driver with realistic expectations of being part of a winning team as our class and championship results to date tend to prove. Joint ownership of the current car is an additional option subject to agreement.

Alternatively, the team is extremely well placed to take on a less experienced or novice driver who could benefit from the dedicated attention available from both team owner Rod Barrett and our professional instructor/driver, Jay Shepherd who is one of the top drivers currently competing in the MSA Britcar GT endurance series. The car, as seen below, is a sunning example of the ultra-reliable Porsche 997 GT3 endurance spec model that is run by our preparation team Neil Garner Motorsport who since 2007 have been instrumental in the team achieving numerous class and race wins and becoming Overall Britcar GT champions in 2008, Class 3 champions in 2009 and in conjunction with Azteca Racing in their 996 GT3, our team mates at Neil Garner Motorsport, 3rd overall in the 2010 Britcar 24hr race, a quite amazing result for a class 3 car. The team is currently in an excellent position in the rankings for the 2011 championship with a very good chance of again taking class 3 honors and with luck, a second place overall in the MSA Britcar GT Championship.

The incoming driver will have the option to enter the final race of 2011 and if all goes well, be included as a team member/driver for class and/or overall championship podium honours, as in the Britcar GT series, the car is the qualifying component as opposed to the drivers.
