Supercar Challenge, Zolder

NGMsport had a promising but challenging debut weekend in the Supercar Challenge at the Belgian circuit of Zolder. With just a single day of practise for the drivers to familiarise themselves with the track and to re-acquaint themselves with the Mosler after its winter rebuild, all was looking promising for a good qualifying session.

Unfortunately an electrical fault caused by a snapped terminal on the alternator ended qualifying early before Morcillo could put in a competitive lap. With stiff competition in this championship the target for this first race weekend was a top 5 finish which was still a possibility starting from 10th on the grid.

At race start Morcillo was able to make up places and within a few laps was up to 6th place and chasing down the leading pack. However just as he was getting close to the leaders a puncture forced him to pit ruining any chance of catching the leaders in this one hour race. Manuel Cintrano completed the race bringing the Mosler home two laps down in 17th place.

The lowly finish meant that in race two Morcillo would be starting from way back in 14th place but again the Spaniard drove a solid race. Describing it as one of the most fun races of his career Morcillo drove through the field and was able to catch the leading pack within a few laps. At the mandatory pit stop Morcillo pitted from an impressive 4th place and as the other pit stops shook out Cintrano left the pit lane briefly holding second place.

It is said that trouble comes in three's and so it did after the Dodge Viper deposited oil along almost the entire length of the track. In trying to avoid this new hazard Cintrano took a little bit too much kerb and broke a drive shaft. What is usually an easy 15 minute repair for the experienced NGMsport team, may as well have been a terminal fault coming late in the 60 minute race ruling out any possibility of getting the car back out on track.

Despite the setbacks the team and drivers are looking forward to re-joining the Supercar Challenge in Spa Francorchamps on June 6th and 7th.
